GARDENING FOR A CHANGING CLIMATE: SHEET MULCHING

Fall 2022

Lincoln Common Ground helped with a workshop led by Codman Community Farms in collaboration with the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust on Putting Your Garden to Bed: Sheet Mulching. Sheet mulching is a no-till technique that suppresses weed growth and adds carbon to the soil. Jess Myles of Codman Community Farms led a hands-on demonstration at the farm.

GARDENING FOR A CHANGING CLIMATE: ECO GARDEN TOURS

Fall 2022

Eco-gardeners Diana Rice and Robin Wilkerson opened their inspiring Lincoln gardens for tours. In Making a Meadow: Easy Tips for Incorporating a Native Meadow, Diana Rice's showed how she transformed her yard into a beautiful pollinator meadow. In Transitions: Incorporating Native Plants and Preparing for Winter, Robin Wilkerson showed how she transformed her garden with carefully sited native plants and talked about leaving the leaves and other tips for winter that support biodiversity and healthy soil. The Eco-Garden tours were part of the Gardening for a Changing Climate series, in collaboration with Codman Community Farms and the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust.

GARDENING FOR A CHANGING CLIMATE: SEED SAVING WORKSHOP

Fall 2022

Lincoln Common Ground helped with a workshop led by the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust and Codman Community Farms on collecting and saving seeds. It saves money and can be used for both native and cultivated seeds. Many native perennial seeds require  stratification.

Save money on your future plantings and propagate native species! We learned how to find and save seeds to use next year.

HEALTHY SOILS WORKSHOP: PLANTING CARBON

Spring 2022

The workshop Planting Carbon: Carbon Cycling and Storage Potential in Soil focused on the importance of soil in the face of a changing climate. Soils store more carbon than the atmosphere and aboveground biomass combined. They have the potential to store more carbon, pulling it out of the atmosphere. As part of the Healthy Soils collaboration between Lincoln Common Ground, Codman Community Farms, and the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust, we demonstrated three methods for increasing carbon storage in soil: no-till gardening, planting native perennials, trees, and shrubs, and adding compost to soil. We also had kids soil activities, including a soil art project and music time.

HEALTHY SOILS WORKSHOP: LIVING SOILS

Spring 2022

The workshop Living Soil: A Closer Look at the Fungi, Bacteria, and Fauna in Soil explored the abundant and diverse life teaming in soils. As part of the Healthy Soils collaboration between Lincoln Common Ground, Codman Community Farms, and the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust, we looked at the important role of fungi in soil, gazed under a microscope and talked about how genomic sequencing and meta-omics are transforming our understanding of soil life, and discussed how dead microbes, or "necromass", are important components of soil organic matter. We also had kids soil activities, including a soil art project and story time.

HEALTHY SOILS WORKSHOP: SOIL TESTING

Spring 2022

The workshop Putting Soil to the Test: Methods for Farms, Fields, and Gardens focused on simple methods to uncover soil properties. As part of the Healthy Soils collaboration between Lincoln Common Ground, Codman Community Farms, and the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust, we demonstrated methods for measuring soil chemistry, soil composition, soil structure, and soil water holding capacity. We also had kids soil activities, including a soil art project and story time. Read more about soil testing here.

LECTURE ON UNCOVERING SOIL: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE WORLD BENEATH OUR FEET

Spring 2022

Lincolnite Dr. Rachel Neurath began the Health Soils Series, a collaboration between Lincoln Common Ground, Codman Community Farms, and the Lincoln Land Conservation Trust, with a an introductory lecture about soil and the benefits of healthy soil, including the potential for climate change mitigation. The lecture was on Zoom and is available to watch here.

FILM SCREENING AND PANEL: KISS THE GROUND

Winter 2022

We screened the film Kiss the Ground, which explores the promise of regenerative agriculture. After, we held a panel with Lincoln farmers Mohammed Hannan (Hannan Healthy Foods) and Pete Lowy (Codman Community Farms), Lincolnite Dr. Rachel Neurath (soil microbial ecologist), and Ryland Engelhart, co-founder of Kiss the Ground. The panel was over Zoom and is available to watch here.
